Standards for Cars Sold on Consignment

Historic Motor Sports is interested in selling most classic, exotic, or other specialty cars on consignment. However, there are some things that we take into consideration before working with a customer. Typically, we will only sell cars valued at $30,000 or more. This means the best of the best classic cars, or well-cared for exotics. We do make an exception for barn finds, but we expect to sell those cars as-is. Most cars we sell should be turn-key and ready to drive. If there are repairs needed, we can coordinate services in preparation for the sale. More details on that below in our 5-step process.

Our Requirements

At a minimum, we require a $1,000 consignment fee. Typically, this is a non-issue as the majority of cars we sell are valued at more than $30,000. However, there are a select few instances where we will help sell a car where the value is less than $30,000 in which case our minimum becomes more relevant.

What is Auto Consignment?

Auto consignment is when a vehicle owner (you) hires a licensed dealership or consignment service (Historic Motor Sports) to sell their car. The owner pays an agreed fee or percentage of the sale price to the consignee for the consignee to handle all aspects of the sale, including advertising, marketing, inspections, appraisals, negotiations, paperwork, and ownership transfer.

How Automotive Consignment Works in 5 Steps

1. Inspecting Your Car

When you first decide to sell your car on consignment with Historic Motor Sports, you will need to bring it down to our facility in Candia, NH so we can properly inspect the car. The inspection helps us determine what kind of condition your car is in. It also helps identify any noteworthy defects or issues a potential buyer would need to know about or repairs that need to be done prior to sale. The inspection process for a consignment sale includes:

2. Vehicle Appraisal

3. Preparing Your Car for Consignment Sale

There are several things you will need to consider when preparing your car to be sold on consignment. When you work with Historic Motor Sports to sell your car, a consignment agreement will be written prior to any services being provided. Services provided include both work to actively sell the vehicle and any necessary repairs that need to be made.

Vehicle repair is something that we offer to help get you the most value for your car. If, during our inspection of the vehicle, we identify any areas of opportunity where a repair to the vehicle would increase its value greater than the cost of the repair, we will suggest the repairs as necessary. Depending on the scope of the repair, this is something that either we can handle or help facilitate through one of the trusted shops in our network.

Detailing your vehicle prior to sale is often a necessary expense to help present the vehicle to potential buyers. It helps showcase the condition of the vehicle in photos. There are exceptions where detailing may not be necessary, but those instances are typically exclusive to barn finds.

To help this process go smoothly, Historic Motor Sports requires a title present when selling a car on consignment. We understand that not everyone has a title available when they are ready to sell their vehicle so we offer guidance on how you can attain one. To help this process go as quickly as possible, we can provide you with step-by-step instructions on what to do.

4. Advertising

Historic Motor Sports is proud to offer in-house photography services to help minimize your expenses. If you are interested in professional photography at an extra cost, we can help organize the photographer.

Cars that we sell on consignment are typically sold through a few different auction sites or online marketplaces. These include auction sites like Bring a Trailer or Hemmings, or online marketplaces like Facebook or Craigslist. Our goal is to sell your car within 30 to 60 days.

5. Consignment Sale Commission & Fees

Historic Motor Sports charges a flat 10% fee on cars sold through consignment. This means that whatever your car sells for, HMS will receive 10% of the final sale price. So, if your car sells for $50,000, we receive $5,000 and you walk away with $45,000. There are no hidden fees. Storage, documentation, and advertising fees are included with our flat 10% fee.

We want expectations to be clear from the start, so we will help decide how much you can expect from the consignment sale of your vehicle. That way, if it sells for more, both parties are happy!

For services provided on the car such as repairs, photography, or detailing, you won’t have to pay out of pocket. HMS covers those expenses until your vehicle has sold, at which point the funds from the sale will reimburse us.

*With a signed & notarized NH Auto Dealers Consignment Agreement, Historic Motor Sports can legally sell your car on your behalf with a preset, guaranteed net return.
